A Blooming Seasonal Garden in Michigan

Featured Garden: Blooming Acre
The Featured Garden series presents weekly editor's picks of gardens from YourGardenShow.com.

Blooming Acre is vibrant flower garden that cycles through the seasons of Michigan. The gardener Joel is passionate about his flowers – and still features some true "heirloom" plants from his grandfather's garden!

How did you become a gardener?

My grandpa's garden from my childhood inspired me to grow a garden – and to make it a focal point of the yard. I still have a few plant from my grandpa's garden!

What is your favorite plant?

My favorite plants are irises, because they bloom early and are so gorgeous!

What's a favorite feature of your garden?

My favorite plant is Snow on the Mountain, a small silver plant that blooms profusely with white flowers and continues to make a great background after blooming.

What's your greatest challenge in gardening?

Bugs are my only great challenge – but with a little patience, they can be eliminated!

What's your best tip for new gardeners?

Plant no more then six new plants each year. Get to know their like and dislikes, and your garden will slowly but surely thrive under any planting conditions.

Thanks to Joel and Blooming Acre for sharing with us! To follow this garden and learn more, visit their glog at Blooming Acre.

Only 6 plants! That is real restraint but excellent advice. Beautiful, beautiful gardens!

I love the idea of limiting new plantings to 6 new varieties a year. It can be hard to exhibit such focused energy when there are so many wonderful plants to put in the ground but by giving yourself a limit you can ensure you don't overwhelm yourself as I usually do!

Your gardens are astounding. I too live in zone 5b and wish I had that much property for my gardens. You are truly a talented gardener. The colors and placement are exceptional.
