The Featured Garden series presents weekly editor's picks of gardens from YourGardenShow.com.
Located in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Kinderboerderij Moestuin is an urban farm where Kris Clark has spent the past several years gardening a veggie patch, amid roaming goats and chickens.
How did you become a gardener?
My grandfathers. One was originally a farmer turned school teacher (who never gardened) and the other grandfather loved to garden and specialized in apple trees. When I was little we had a vegetable garden, which I hated to weed as a chore, but having grown up with tomoatoes, rhubarb and cauliflowers in the garden I guess it was always a part of me.
What is your favorite plant?
Honeysuckle - always loved honeysuckle. The smell, the flavor and the light tint of the flowers, it's just a very happy plant. And box hedging, the smell of it reminds me of my grandparent's garden.
What's a favorite feature of your garden?
All of it, but particularly (this year) the pumpkin and the lathyrus. The pumpkin has a taken over the path so you have to jump high to get over it. With little pumpkins growing along that long stem it's fascinating. Lathryus is a favorite because it creates a great wall of flowers, but, actually, my permanent favorite is the tomatoes. I just love how they grow!
What's your greatest challenge in gardening?
Moles...they tend to under tunnel right after seeding. Also, trying to match ambition to ability and time.
What's your best tip for new gardeners?
Patience! It takes forever and sometimes things don't grow.
