A Flowering Oasis in Orland Park, Illinois

Located in Orland Park, Illinois, Mary's Escape is a flower garden created in honor of Mary's mother.
How did you become a gardener?
I have always loved flowers and found great peace with blooming plants and greenery around me. This garden became a reality the summer after my mother died when I was looking for ways to honor her life and find peace with her passing. As the plants flourished and the colors erupted, I knew she would love it and felt it paid her great homage and got me hooked. Each year it expanded a bit more and remains the source of many hours of enjoyment for my husband and I.
What is your favorite plant?
Wow, this is a hard one to answer, I love so many...I love butterfly bushes for their deep shades, great fragrance and of course, the butterflies and humming birds that frequent them . I love vintage flowers such as hollyhocks and dahlias because they add such great color to the garden palate...
What's a favorite feature of your garden?
I love the Tuscan fountain planted smack in the middle of the garden, it seems the best of both worlds, beautiful plants and flowing water on a sunny day.
What's your greatest challenge in gardening?
Weeds, deadheading, and making sure the water system is adequate when I change the bedding design from year to year.
What's your best tip for new gardeners?
If you love a plant or flower try it, use good soil, feed your plants regularly and ask YGS experts like those on the YGS website for advice when you aren't sure how to manage a plants or gardens. I am a lover of plants and flowers, not an expert and don't pretend to be.
