Plant the Seeds of Love this Valentine's Day
Valentine's Day - it's a day of expressing love to those near and dear. It's also a day mired in history and mythology. Some say that Valentine's Day honors Saint Valentine, who married young lovers when it was against the law for young men to marry, that they might be shipped off to war. Others say the Catholic church created the holiday on the traditional Pagan holiday of Lupercalia, a fertility festival dedicated to the Roman god of agriculture.
Whatever its origins, Valentine's Day has become synonymous with love, with some of us showering candy and flowers upon our loved ones, and others sharing a special meal. Why not continue this day of showing love and appreciation throughout the year? If you garden, you might consider planting an extra row of vegetables to donate to the food bank for those who could use a little extra. Or, you might express your love by sharing the joy of gardening with a grandchild and pass on both seeds and seeds of knowledge.
In these next few weeks, YourGardenShow hopes to inspire this same spirit in the form of seeds - heirloom seeds - as part of a contest to preserve the legacy of these time-honored plants. Heirlooms have been grown and shared with family and neighbors for generations, that everyone may enjoy and be nourished by the fruits they bear.
What better a gift of love?
Grow Heirlooms. Grow Diversity. Grow Community. Grow LOVE.
