A Poppy Lovers Garden in Italy

Featured Garden: Poppydreams
The Featured Garden series presents weekly editor's picks of gardens from YourGardenShow.com.

Located in Gualdo, Italy, Poppydreams is the creation of a new gardener name Carola. From the looks of her pictures you would never guess she has only been gardening for two years!

How did you become a gardener?

When I was 5 years old my mother gave me a tiny garden with 2-3 square-meter space in the northern part of Germany and said I can put in whatever I want. I got little pieces of sedum and some tiny carnation. It was located next to 2 big lilac-bushes where you could sit and have a rest.  We moved before a year went by and I never saw my effort I put in "my garden.  Many years went by without a garden, but lots of balconies got covered with pots until I got a real garden in the country in Iowa.  I had to learn all the plant names now in English and how to deal with freezing soil down 3 feet deep. After all this experience I found the best solution for my deep-rooted garden needs: le marche in italy 430 meter high with snow, but also olive trees and as much space as I ever wanted.

What is your favorite plant?

Of course there is the poppy - when I was a child I always tried to bring the poppies home from our long walks to put in a vase. I learned through the "Perennial Gardener" how to grow them, but now that I have them even growing here in Italy in my garden, it is a hit!

What's a favorite feature of your garden?

The best are the mature trees. When we chose this place the big trees were reason we bought it.  We have evergreens, laurel, pine, juniper, a huge boxwood, olives, chinese privet and of course oleander.

What's your greatest challenge in gardening?

There is just so much time, space and energy to play in the garden.

What's your best tip for new gardeners?

Appreciate each small step.  When I get a new plant and it some how survives my humble treatment, I find myself admiring the tiny new growth.   The first little bud and the gift of a freshly opened flower that I can have a close look at.
